Bacteria binding

Model: Lucent

Modes used – AFM, LSM

Measuring the adhesion forces between bacteria and the substrates is a challenge. Our clients strive to develop surface treatment products to selectively dislodge bacterial species from various surfaces. One way to characterize their products is to use the Lucent AFM in the manipulation mode. Coated micro beads are often used in life sciences. We cultured bacteria with micro beads and then used the AFM tip to push the beads on defined surfaces, while measuring the forces. Characteristic stick and slip motion of the bead can be picked up in the Force measurement providing a measure of the adhesion forces. The bead shift can be verified with the optical microscope image too. The same technique when applied directly to the much tinier bacteria runs into complications. Speak to us to learn more.
